چکیده

The studies of standard and neoclassical tearing instabilities in experimental tokamak plasmas show that these modes can be a serious problem on the path toward magnetic fusion. A precise understanding of their dynamics therefore is crucial, but requires full toroidal extended magneto-hydrodynamic (MHD) simulations. Solving this problem is difficult, both from the point of view of the extreme physical and numerical conditions. Our three-dimensional initial value code XTOR solving the resistive MHD equations with thermal transport and neoclassical effects allows us to reproduce the dynamics of these modes as observed experimentally with plasma parameters reasonably approaching those of laboratory plasmas. Our recent results on the nonlinear full toroidal simulations of standard and neoclassical tearing instabilities give an insight to all the numerical difficulties which must be solved for the simulation of slow MHD instabilities in full toroidal geometry.  2004 Elsevier B.V. Computational modeling of neoclassical and resistive magnetohydrodynamic tearing modes in tokamaks

Numerical studies of the nonlinear evolution of magnetohydrodynamic–type tearing modes in three-dimensional toroidal geometry with neoclassical effects are presented. The inclusion of neoclassical physics introduces an additional free-energy source for the nonlinear formation of magnetic islands through the effects of a bootstrap current in Ohm’s law. The neoclassical tearing mode is demonstrat...

Turbulent transport and flow effects on NTM evolution and trigger mechanisms

Abstract. We study two problems related to the excitation and nonlinear evolution of neoclassical tearing modes in a tokamak, namely, (i) the effect of a background of microturbulence generated by short scale length instabilities such as the Ion Temperature Gradient (ITG) mode or the Electron Temperature Gradient (ETG) mode and (ii) the effect of a toroidal sheared flow on the stability of the ...

Multi-scale interaction among neoclassical tearing mode and drift wave turbulence

Abstract. The multi-scale interaction among the tearing mode and the drift wave is investigated using reduced MHD model including the electron viscosity. It is newly found that the fluctuating bootstrap current in the Ohm’s law gives rise to a new instability for the regime where the tearing mode is stable. The stability depends on the dissipations and kinetic effects. This result implies that ...

Introduction to Neoclassical Tearing Modes and the Role of Rotation

It is now well established from theoretical considerations and from several experimental observations of long pulse high β tokomak discharges that the limit on plasma pressure is not set by the ideal MHD modes but is rather due to the onset of low (m, n) resistive modes. These instabilities, which produce magnetic islands at the low order rational surfaces, appear to be well described by the ne...

EX/P5-3 Momentum Transport from Tearing Instability

In the MST reversed field pinch the radial profile of the plasma rotation undergoes a rapid flattening during magnetic reconnection events. The reconnection events are repetitive (occurring as sawtooth crashes) and correspond to bursts of tearing instabilities. The radial transport of toroidal and poloidal momentum occurs faster than can be explained by collisions. We measure the change in mome...
